Power and Control Over Guns and Money

Obama gun control

These are troubling times indeed.

While our president is sworn into office again on Sunday, he is using his bully pulpit to force his big government agenda on Americans that is founded on control. He just announced sweeping measures under the auspices of gun control in response to the Newtown Connecticut school shooting last month.

Controlling guns will merely disarm law-abiding citizens who may need their arms to defend themselves, and who have constitutional rights to their firearms to ward off tyrannical government as needed – always unlikely, always possibly, always protected under the U.S. Constitution.

Using children as props in media events is commonplace, but it is wholly inappropriate in this situation. The measures announced by the Commander-in-Chief unfortunately have nothing to do with keeping those kids or any other kids safe.

Mental health protocols for unstable people is a much better place to consider policy changes, but that is given small consideration in the power grab executive orders and legislative plans the President addressed yesterday.

While all this is going on, it won’t be long before media then swoon the way of the White House for a headline-selling battle over the debt ceiling. Will Republicans recognize they have nothing to lose by holding fast to deficit-cutting, debt reducing principles of limited government? They would be wise set their own agenda and stick to it. Otherwise, such as with the “fiscal cliff” charade, they will be reacting to a president who does not respect them or consider them in the development of economic or any other policies in this country.

It would be nice to be able to say that the President is acting in good faith in these matters, but unfortunately power and control seem to be ever-important in his considerations and calculations. This is reflected in comments at two different press events this week in which Obama dismisses out-of-hand the intentions and standing of Republicans and other opponents:

Gun control event

“There’ll be pundits and politicians and public interest lobbyists publicly warning of a tyrannical all out assault on our liberty. Not because that’s true….but because they want to gin up fear or higher ratings or revenue for themselves…And behind the scenes they’ll do everything they can to block any common sense reform and make sure nothing changes what-so-ever.”

Do you believe that the White House will not “do everything they can” “behind the scenes” with everything they have? They will indeed do so to promote big government solutions that do not directly address the real issues behind Newtown, Connecticut. If that were the case, then these are reforms that Obama should have promoted when he controlled the White House and both houses of Congress two years ago to prevent tragedies such as Newtown.

Press conference

At his press conference Monday morning, President Obama got a tough question from Major Garrett about the politics of debt-ceiling negotiations. In his response, the President blamed GOP absolutism for the crisis; then, as if missing his own point, offered a list of compromises he absolutely would not consider.

This is all just a preview of the Obama second term. Watch for more of this hypocrisy to continue in areas we can’t even imagine now.
